Love story by Giledhel-Narya Love story by Giledhel-Narya
My first attempt at stained glass... Beren and Lúthien (one of Middle Earth more known couples, human and elf maiden), and some "extracts" of their story.

Will be part of the background of a bigger picture where the main characters will be the couple on "When no one's looking" [link]

I have the feeling that the stone should have some variation on the tone of the colour, but I haven't found any that fits well... Anyway.

What do you think?
-------------------------------

I like this! One 'negative' thing only, and that is the text being beveled, it makes it cheaper actually, but your work is great!

I see what you mean. At the time I was so tired of working on it that I took as many shortcuts as possible... but you're right in that it doesn't add anything of value, at all.

Thank you!

yeah i know the feeling.. been there done that! But you know, you can do version nr. 2. You know what Mr. Leo Da Vinci said? "Art is never finished, only abandoned". He was right then, and still that line is valid, 4-500 years later. Mankind don't change even if we try to pretend we get smarter or better. We never change our nature, and evolution is a lie :P

This is beautiful.  Beren and Luthien's story is my favorite story in the Silmarillion!  :)

Thank you! I have to admit it's not hard, but very time consuming and it got me easily on my nerves!

Kept trying, I'm sure you can find your way to drawing it!

Yeah, I think that was one of my troubles was the amount of time! Not to mention, I always wanted to make the panels SO small! Oh well, I shall have to correct!

I shall try! :D

what does the tengwar say? I used to be able to read that :(

On Beren's "panel" it says "Beren" (on top) and "Erchamion" (bottom), and on Lúthien it says "Lúthien (top) and "Tinúviel", in Sindarin mode.

Then on the bottom-left panel it says "Beren qualmë", that means "Beren's death", and on the bottom-right panel it says "Námo marissen", "On Mandos' Halls", on Quenya Mode

I think I made some mistakes (I'm not so sure about Tinúviel or "Beren" really meaning "Beren's" right now), but that's it, more or less.

Thanks for the comment!

"Tinúviel" is fine. You have the wrong "ch" in "Erchamion": the tengwa you used means the English "ch" in "church", and you want the Sindarin "ch", which is spelled with harma or hwesta (the glyphs you get out of most tengwar fonts by typing "d" or "c").

There are actually a few different Sindarin modes that we know of. You're using the mode Aragorn wrote in, which is also the one most similar to Quenya mode. There is also the mode of Beleriand (from the West-Gate of Moria), which might or might not be better. Are you picturing this window as being made in Eregion? Gondor? Rivendell? Númenor? If it's from Eregion, the mode of Beleriand is probably more appropriate.

(Where the picture comes from also affects which tengwa to use for "ch": hwesta (Tengwar font "c") is probably better if this window comes from anywhere near where Men live.)

I also disapprove of mixing modes within sentences. It would be better to put the "Beren" in "Beren qualmë" in Quenya mode, even though it's a Sindarin word; this gives the reader a clue that the next word is qualmë, not aclem. (Also, this is how Tolkien wrote "Elessar Telcontar aran Gondor ar Arnor": all in Sindarin mode, even though "Elessar Telcontar" is Quenya.)

I know a lot more about tengwar than I do about Quenya, but according to http://folk.uib.no/hnohf/qcourse.htm, the way you say "Beren's" or "Námo's" is to add a -va/-wa ending (this is the possessive/adjectival case, if you want to start digging into Quenya grammar) and usually goes after the word it modifies: marissen Námova, qualmë Berenwa.

Pardon me. It's a beautiful window. I'm just a fan of tengwar, and like talking about it.

First of all, thank you for the time you've taken to write all this, even if it's not about the picture "per se".

Then, nothing to pardon. I love tengwar, and I don't mind talking about it either, so the comment is very comment. I must say that nowadays I wouldn't have written it the way I did back then (it's been more than three years now). I had to look up _any_ Sindarin mode to write the names, because I knew just the Quenya mode, and I didn't know about different modes for it, so I just went with the one that looked easier (and so, closer to the Quenya mode).
About the possessive's, I remember thinking about it for a loooong time, but was never sure if I should go for the possessive-partitive (as it is called here) or the possessive-adjectival... so I went with the "third" one, don't remember the name, the one that's defined by the inversed order of the words (not for a special reason, just because I could not decide between the other too).

Then, about the change between Sindarin and Quenya mode in the sentences, I just did what felt more logical to me: I did not know any Sindarin, just Quenya, so it wasn't an option to write them in Sindarin (even if that would have been the more logical thing to do), so I just mixed. And then found the problem of writing the B on Quenya mode... so just kept the Sindarin for the name. Nontheless, I think you're right and I should have done it all in Quenya mode, or all in Sindarin and Sindarin mode.

Then, about the selected Sindarin mode... as I said, back then I did not know how many and what differenced one mode from another. Now, knowing more, and reading your comment, I still would not know exactly which one to choose. The window is in Eregion, near the late city of Ost-in-Edhil... but was done at a much later age (during Aragorn's realm over the Reunited Kingdom)*. So I suppose it depends on who did write the text for the window when it was made, on the very end of TA/begining of FA.

Maybe I could say it's not my fault but the "original" writer inside the story... ;)

Anyway, I know more Quenya than Tengwar, that's for sure (even now, that I've "studied" more tengwar than back then, and I really appreciate the thought you've put on that comment.

Thank you very, very much!

(and I'm glad you like the picture!)

*That window is just the background for another picture, and that's where I draw the date from: the year I "know" (because it shows a scene between two characters, one I roleplay with).

Very cool-looking. As to your question on stained glass; usually it is darker at the edges and lighter in the middle.
